Keoladeo Ghana National Park has a fascinating history. It was created as a royal hunting reserve for the Maharajas of Bharatpur in the 1850s. The area was developed by creating a system of dams and dykes to form a permanent wetland, making it a prime location for duck shoots. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1956, a national park in 1982, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

For resident breeding birds, the post-monsoon period from August to October is ideal. The summer months (April-June) are very hot and less rewarding for birdwatching.
